How to Check if Travel Booking Sites Are Legit

  • Always read reviews from multiple sources (Google, Trustpilot, or forums like Reddit) to see other travelers’ experiences.

  • Check for secure website indicators, such as “https” in the URL and a padlock symbol near the address bar.

  • Look for well-known affiliations with trusted companies or travel organizations (e.g., IATA accreditation).

  • Call their customer service line to test responsiveness—if it’s hard to reach them, that’s a red flag.

Always Check the US Department of State Travel Advisories For Your Destination Country Before Planning a Trip Abroad

UNDERSTAND THE LEVELS

The four levels of increasing risk are:

  • Level 1: Exercise normal caution

  • Level 2: Exercise increased caution

  • Level 3: Reconsider travel

  • Level 4: Do not travel

LOOK FOR RISK INDICATORS

Countries with a level 2 or higher advisory will also have a risk indicator. Risk indicators are letters that represent specific reasons for the advisory level, such as:

  • C: Crime

  • T: Terrorism

  • U: Civil unrest

  • H: Health

  • N: Natural disaster

  • E: Time-limited event

  • K: Kidnapping/Hostage taking

  • O: Other
